2007-2011 MazdaSpeed 3 Performance Upgrade Guide – Stage 2

Once you achieve the initial level of power gains with your MazdaSpeed 3 that we discussed in our MazdaSpeed 3 Stage 1 Upgrade Guide, it is likely that you will be interested in getting even more.  However, proceeding onto stage 2 requires a significantly higher level of caution and skill to accomplish safely and successfully.  In addition, component choice at this point is even more important, since it is that much easier for something to go wrong.

  • Stage 2: ≈60-100whp
    • High Pressure Fuel Pump
      • Because the MazdaSpeed 3 has a direct injected engine, it has two fuel pumps, a high pressure pump that supplies the injectors and a low pressure feeder pump.  CPE MZR DISI HPFpump for MazdaSPEED3When aiming for significant power over 300whp, the stock high pressure fuel pump is unable to supply enough fuel at a high enough pressure.  This has the effect of making the fuel injectors stay open for too long, and may even cause dangerously lean conditions due to fuel starvation.  If the injectors are kept open for too long, they are more likely to burn out and will need to be replaced.  To solve this problem, Velocity Factor recommends an upgraded high-performance fuel pump.  The one that we have had the most success with is the CPE MZR DISI HPFpump for the MazdaSpeed 3.  This pump utilizes the stock pump core, and completely replaces the internal components with high-performance grade parts.  Each pump is then tested and precisely broken in on CPE’s test rig and is shipped to you with a complete report which shows exactly what the newly upgraded pump is capable of.  Because it utilized the stock pump core, installation is simple.  Because this pump is of such high quality, CPE is able to offer it with a lifetime warranty.
    • High-Flow Cat and Downpipe
      • The downpipe and factory catalytic converter is the most restrictive portion of the exhaust, and has a lot of potential for power increase when replaced with a quality MazdaSpeed 3 performance dowCobb 3” Downpipe for MazdaSpeed 3npipe.  When dealing with the MazdaSpeed 3 specifically, the downpipe is one of the most sensitive components.  When replacing the downpipe on the MazdaSpeed 3, it is very important to pick the right brand.  In our experience, we have actually seen the turbo get damaged when the proper downpipe wasn’t used.  We have found that the Cobb 3” Downpipe for the MazdaSpeed 3 is the best option.  One of the main things that sets Cobb downpipe for the MazdaSpeed 3 apart from the others is the positioning of the O2 sensor.  Other downpipes do not have the O2 sensor properly positioned, and this results in calibration problems within the ECU.  Over time, this can lead to significant damage to the turbo.  The Cobb Downpipe also has a custom high-flow cat that is specially designed for this application and works very well.  We have found that the MazdaSpeed 3 engine needs to have a cat installed on the downpipe.  If it does not have one, the turbo tends to fail over time.
    • Upgraded Intercooler
      • Just as the downpipe is the most restrictive part on the exhaust side, the factory intercooler can be the most restrictive component on the inlet side.  Furthermore, because the factory intercooler is top-mount, it is more prone to heat-soak.  The restriction in the factory intercooler reduces flow.  The heat-soak and inherent inefficiency of the intercooler increase the charge temperature of the incoming air.  The higher temperature reduces the density of the air, which reduces how much oxygen gets into your engine.  The lower flow reducETS Topmount Intercooler for MazdaSPeed 3es this even further.  The solution to this problem is to install an upgraded performance intercooler.  This can sometimes be an expensive proposition, so Velocity Factor has a couple suggestions that can fit various budgets.  We have had very good success with the ETS TMIC MazdaSpeed 3 Top-mount Intercooler.  The ETS Top-mount Intercooler features an efficient bar-and-plate intercooler core and has a bolt-on design which utilizes the factory mounting points.  This makes for a significantly simpler installation.  It is available in 5 CPE Front Mount Intercooler for MazdaSPEED 3anodized colors to fit your specific color scheme.  For those who have a larger budget to work with, we highly recommend upgrading to a front mount intercooler kit.  The advantage of this type of design is that it significantly reduces the amount of heat-soak that the intercooler will be exposed to.  We recommend the CPE MazdaSpeed 3 Delta-Core Front Mount Intercooler kit.  This kit features CPE’s own Delta-Core intercooler, custom silicone upper radiator hose, and a new larger capacity power steering cooler.  CPE has put a lot of time and money into the design and testing of this kit.  They have published a very detailed white-paper about their intercooler kit.  We recommend you read it before investing any of your money into an intercooler upgrade.  Another good option that has given us good results is the Cobb Front Mount Intercooler Kit for the MazdaSpeed 3.Cobb Front Mount Intercooler Kit for the MazdaSpeed 3

  2. Just installed the Cobb Intake and Turbo Inlet pipe and the Cobb Accessport. I dyno’d my car brand new, 2012 Mazdaspeed3 with only 10Kmiles, and it put down 237front wheel hp, and 262 lb/ft of torque. Immediately after this install i dyno’d again and it put down 291 lb/ft torque and 261hp. I’m excited to see where the cobb downpipe and Intercooler put me, but i am anticipating getting over 300 on both numbers!

    • That’s great!! I’m glad you have gotten good results with your upgrades.

  3. Going to be installing a short ram intake and turbo inlet pipe and a tune. I have heard that a few MS3’s have had fuel pump issues with just these mods. This is all I will be doing, and don’t want to have to get a hffp, for two simple bolt ons and mild tune. Any thoughts or experience with boost spikes/fuel cut with just a SRI, TIP and stage 1 tune? Please, any help would be great.

    • This depends on the intake that you install. A well engineered intake system will not be a problem. We recommend the Cobb SF SRI. For tuning, we suggest the Cobb Accessport. The Cobb SF SRI incorporates an air straightener grid, and the AccessPort maps are specifically designed to compliment and optimize the performance with the Cobb intake.

If you have any questions, we are always available to provide free advice and support. We also have some specials on Cobb products right now. Feel free to call us 561-395-5700. We are open Monday-Friday 10:00-6:00, and Saturday 12:00 – 4:00.

      • I have the SURE Motorsports Aeros SRI and their silicone TIP. It has a CNC machined airflow straightener and MAF housing. It is extremely similar to the Cobb SF, and has a lifetime warranty, and a zero check engine light guarantee. Their TIP is almost exactly the same as Cobb’s. My hypertech programmer has a calibration for that intake and TIP (same as the AP). I just don’t want to have fuel pump issues. Thanks so much for the help VF

      • I’m glad you found our advice helpful. Post up a reply when you flash your ECU with the hypertech, I’m interested to see how it turns out for you.

If you need anything else for your car, you know how to get in touch with us ;-). We do a lot of Speed3 cars at the shop, and are always running specials on various parts and services for it.

        Thanks.

      • Well, I installed my SURE Motorsports SRI, Turbo Inlet Pipe, and flashed my ECU with the Hypertech tune, and all I can say is WOW! Love the torque, the new powerband, and the audible turbo noise etc. I would highly recommend all of these products to anyone looking for a Cobb alternative.

  4. Thanks for all this information is good to have people willing to share it. According to your experience so few whp are the internals of the mazdapseed 3 safe ? Already developed Stage 3 ???

    • The internals of the MS3 are no problem for moderate builds. When planning a stage 3 build, it gets a bit more complicated. Stage 3 requires larger turbo, new clutch, and possibly a complete engine build. Basically, each stage 3 build is pretty much unique. If you are serious about making this kind of power, we recommend you getting in touch with us. We are always available to provide free advice and support. Feel free to call us 561-395-5700. We are open Monday-Friday 10:00-6:00, and Saturday 12:00 – 4:00. Ask for Felipe.

    • Hi David,
Congratulations on your new intake, and thanks for reading our blog!!

The intake will work on its own, and will provide an increase in power. However, if you want to maximize the benefit that you get from the intake, then we recommend you get the Cobb AccessPort engine tune.

    • Installing a catless downpipe on the MazdaSpeed 3 is a pretty big deal. This requires a lot of supporting mods and the ECU needs to be tuned in order to run safely. If this is a mod that you are interested, we recommend that you first get in touch with us to discuss your goals for your car. Give us a call, our number is 561-395-5700. We are open Monday-Friday 10:00-6:00EST, and Saturday 12:00-4:00EST.

  5. Hello ,
i just installed a cobb downpipe and SRI and replaces my internals on my 08 MS3. Is the Cobb accessport needed for these modification to work properly? Also, is the stage 2 map sufficient or do i need to have someone custom tune it?

  6. Yes, any time you upgrade the downpipe, a tune is required. Otherwise the car will run dangerously lean. The Cobb AccessPort is the best tuning solution for the MazdaSpeed 3, especially if you have a Cobb Downpipe.

The stage-2 map will be sufficient for the mods you mentioned.

We are a Cobb Factory Authorized dealer, you can get an AccessPort directly from our website here:
    https://www.velocityfactor.net/scripts/prodview.asp?idproduct=3565

Alternatively, please feel free to call us. We often have special pricing for our blog members, make sure to mention that you are coming from the blog. Give us a call, our number is 561-395-5700. We are open Monday-Friday 10:00-6:00EST, and Saturday 12:00-4:00EST.

    • Upgrading to a larger turbo is a really big step. It requires multiple supporting mods and extensive tuning. It is highly dependant on what your specific power goals are, and how you intend to drive your car. My reccomendation would be for you to call us up and we can help you decide on what solution would be best for you.

Our number is 561-395-5700. We are open Monday-Friday 10:00-6:00EST, and Saturday 12:00-4:00EST. Ask for Felipe, and please dont forget to mention that you are a blog reader.

      Thanks.

  7. Also I see you guys are located in boca raton, I live in orlando which is a 2 hour ride can I buy my upgrades and you guys can install them??

    • Yes, of course, we would be happy to do that!! That is something we specialize in. When you call to discuss your turbo upgrade, we can discuss installation as well.

Thanks again for reading the blog and for getting in touch with us for your build. We look forward to speaking with you.

  8. I was told that on the gen 2, sometimes with just an intake, you need high flow fuel pump internals. What is true?

    • If all you do is an intake, then you do not need the high flow fuel pump. The high-flow fuel pump is needed when you start to significantly increase your airflow and revs with mods such as a downpipe and ECU Flash.

I hope that helps you out. We are always happy to provide free advice on our blog or over the phone. Our number is 561-395-5700. We are open Monday-Friday 10:00-6:00EST, and Saturday 12:00-4:00EST.

  9. I got 2011 MS3 i installed a K&N CAI intake .I’m thinking to install a CorkSport Turbo Inlet Pipe ,CorkSport Power Series Racepipe ,Oil Catch Can and flash the ECU with stage 1 map COBB AccessPORT!! WILL I HAW TO CHANGE THE FUEL PUMP ?

    • Because you are not replacing your downpipe, you may be able to get away with the stock fuel pump if you keep your revs low. HOWEVER, since you are replacing the Turbo Inlet Pipe, removing one of the cats, and reflashing the ECU, I would suggest that you go with the High Performance Fuel Pump just to be safe. Judging from the mods you listed, I anticipate you will most likely wind up upgrading your downpipe eventually anyway. So you might as well err on the side of caution and get the upgraded fuel pump now.

I would also suggest you consider getting NGK plugs as well. It would definitely be a good idea. You can find them on our site here:
      http://www.velocityfactor.net/scripts/prodview.asp?idproduct=4482

I hope that helps you out. We are always happy to provide free advice on our blog or over the phone. Our number is 561-395-5700. We are open Monday-Friday 10:00-6:00EST, and Saturday 12:00-4:00EST.

      • Thanks a lot for the answer, I will check out the NGK plugs. Is the CPE MZR DISI HPFpump 100% compatible with gen 2 mazdaspeed engine >?

  10. If I am adding a stage 2 sri with tip (corksport), cp-e stage 2 rmm and a cp-e hpfp, will I be able to run stage 2 maps from my cobb v3 ap? or do I need to stick with stage 1 maps until I upgrade my downpipe?

    • Hi Aaron,
Thanks for reading our blog. For the mods that you listed, we recommend sticking with the Stage-1 map. The Stage-2 map is for cars that have the upgraded performance downpipe.

Once you upgrade to the performance high-flow downpipe, you will see a significant increase in performance. The stock downpipe is the biggest restriction to your airflow.

When you are ready to upgrade to Stage-2, please feel free to give us a call. We usually have special pricing on most items for our blog readers, and of course, we are always happy to provide free advice over the phone. Our number is 561-395-5700. 11. what would be everything I would need to reach around 300hp on my 2013 ms3 I have a CS SRI+TIP and plan to get cobb tuner and a CS TMIC would that make it reach?

Enjoyed reading the blog also read stage 1

    DK

    • Hi Drew,

Thank you for reading our blog. I’m glad you are finding it useful.

We generally recommend the Cobb intake over the CS because it tends to work better with the Cobb AccessPort tune. But since you already have the CS intake and inlet pipe, we can work around it. It has the air straightener grid, so it will still work. One thing we recommend with the CS intake though is to at least change the filter that it comes with. The filter that comes with it is not the best quality, we recommend the Blitz Stainless Steel Filter. We have it available at our site here:
      http://www.velocityfactor.net/scripts/prodview.asp?idproduct=4188

You are completely correct about going with the Cobb AccessPort tuner. Good decision.

The downpipe is the biggest restriction. We recommend going with the Cobb Downpipe WITH cat. The MazdaSpeed3 turbo tends to over-rev and burn out faster without the cat. The Cobb Downpipe is the best one we have come across for multiple reasons.

With the downpipe, you will also need an upgraded fuel pump and spark plugs. We recommend the CPE Fuel pump and NGK spark plugs.

After the downpipe, the next bottleneck is the intercooler. For top-mount, we recommend the ETS Intercooler. If you decide to go with a front mount, we recommend either the CPE or Cobb Front Mount Intercooler.

With all this power, it is also important to invest in supporting mods that improve reliability and safety. Two important things to look into would be an oil catch can and engine mounts. The oil catch can would significantly reduce the oil buildup in your intake which would keep everything cleaner. This also reduces the chances of detonation. As you increase boost, this becomes more and more important. As torque and power increase, the stock engine mounts become less affective. This puts more strain on your clutch and transmission. We recommend going with the CPE engine mounts. We have also recently been getting great results with methanol injection. Meth injection is really great fo lowering intake temps and reducing detonation. If this is something you are interested in, we recommend the Snow Performance line of methanol kits.

I hope that helps you out. If you have any more questions, we are always happy to provide free advice on our blog or over the phone. Our number is 561-395-5700. We are open Monday-Friday 10:00-6:00EST, and Saturday 12:00-4:00EST.

  12. Hi!
Congratulations on your website and support. I would like to know which upgrade is more important for me based on my set up (and budget). I currently have cobb SRI and access port tune stage 1 on my 2011 speed3. Fuel pressure stays over 1500 when I accelerate so im debating wheather to get HPFP internals or oil catch can with the NGK sparkplugs u guys offer… Cant afford them all 3 right now so which way do u guys think is better?

    • Hi Juan,

Thanks for reading our blog, I’m glad you are finding it informative.

For your situation, I would definitely recommend going with the catch-can and NGK spark plugs. You really only need the High Performance Fuel Pump for the MazdaSpeed 3 after you upgrade your MazdaSpeed 3 downpipe.

The catch-can will significantly improve your car’s reliability, make your engine cleaner, and reduce the chances of detonation. The NGK spark plugs will improve your performance as well.

  14. I currently have a 08 MS3 with a Turbo Smart Blow off valve and an AEM intake. I’m looking at getting a Cobb Front Mount intercooler. Will my car require a tunning?

    • With the Blow off Valve and Intake, you can get away using the stock tune. It’s not ideal, it’s not great, but you can get away with it. When you start adding modifications that significantly increase the airflow, such as an intercooler or turbo inlet pipe, then you really need to get a tune. We recommend going with the Cobb AccessPort.

We are a Cobb Factory Authorized Dealer. When you are ready to get your intercooler and AccessPort, please give us a call. Be sure to metnion that you are from the blog and we’ll take care of you. Our number is 561-395-5700. We are open Monday-Friday 10:00-6:00EST, and Saturday 12:00-4:00EST.

  15. Hi guys !!
i have a mazdaspeed 3 2008 ,with some mods and my question is how many hp can i get from a k04 turbo with my mods ?
and im gonna need a custom map for my car ,and how much for the custom tune ?
    my mods are :
cobb ap,cobb sri, cobb inlet pipe, autotech internals, turbo xs dp 3″,cbe 3″,aem wmi kit, boost tubes ic,denso iridium itv20,wiseco forged pistons, and molnar connecting rods, koni yellow struts, su rmm, i preciate for your advice !!

    • Hi Rodrigo,

Thank you for reading our blog. The K04 turbo is actually the turbo that the MazdaSpeed 3 comes with stock. The internal modifications you list are very impressive, but will not give you very much advantage with the stock K04 turbo. To take full advantage of those mods, you would need to go up to a larger turbo, such as a GT28 or GT30. Of course, you will also need an upgraded fuel pump to have your car tuned once the larger turbo is installed.

This sounds like a very interesting project, with very specific needs. If you would like to discuss it in more detail, please feel free to give us a call. We are always happy to provide free advice and support over the phone. Our number is 561-395-5700. We are open Monday-Friday 10:00-6:00EST, and Saturday 12:00-4:00EST. 16. Great Blog, i Have a 2011 speed 3 with injen CAI and HKS Bov, I plan on getting an exhaust system and downpipe. Any recommendations on which exhaust system i should get? As far as DP, I would love to be able to go COBB on the downpipe but it is extremely expensive, any other recommendations on what other DP are good quality, also as for the fuel pump i am on the same boat. Would love to get the CPe HPFP but its not in my budget at the moment. Which way can i go? I also plan on getting the AP, what should i do first?

    • Hi Mono,
Thank you for following our blog.

First and foremost, I would definitely suggest going with the Cobb AccessPort. The AccessPort really is the best bang for the buck. Aside from that, it is also the logical first step to any build. Without the Cobb AccessPort tune, none of the other components will be utilized to their full potential.

After that, an intake and exhaust is good. They will give your car a better sound, and give you a bit more power. CP-e and Ultimate Racing both have good cat-back options for the MazdaSpeed 3.

The bolt-on component that will give you the biggest increase in power is the downpipe. We definitely recommend going with the Cobb Downpipe for MazdaSpeed 3 applications. We have experience with many different options, and this one really gives the best results. If you want to save a little money, the only other option we would feel somewhat comfortable with is the CP-e downpipe. However, you would only be saving around $60 bucks. Personally, I don’t think it would be worth it. If you do decide to go with another downpipe other than the Cobb, MAKE SURE THAT IT HAS A HIGH FLOW CAT!!!!!. I can’t emphasize that enough. The stock turbo on the MazdaSpeed 3 is very sensitive. For whatever reason, it needs the cat in that position. Without it, the turbo tends to burn out. We have seen this on multiple cars.

Of course, once you take the jump and upgrade your downpipe, you will also need to retune and upgrade your fuel pump at the same time. It is not safe to run an upgraded downpipe on the MazdaSpeed 3 without an upgraded fuel pump. the stock fuel pump will not be able to keep up with fuel demands, and you will be running dangerously lean. The only High Performance Fuel Pump for MazdaSpeed 3 applications that we recommend is the CP-e Fuel Pump.

I hope that helps give you a better idea of what you can do to improve your car. If you need some more help, please feel free to give us a call. We are always happy to provide free advice and support over the phone. Our number is 561-395-5700. We are open Monday-Friday 10:00-6:00EST, and Saturday 12:00-4:00EST.

  17. Hi I have a 2013 MS3. I have Cobb Sri,TIP, BPV, ETS TMIC, Autotech HPFP internals, Street Unit Boost tube and intercooler tubes, Test pipe, Magna flow CBE. I am installing NGK H7 plugs with downpipe. I also have the Cobb V2 accessport and am running the stage 2 cobb ots 93 map. I just got my catless downpipe (OBX). I know it is recommended to go with the Cobb or at least a high flow catted downpipe, but I am just trying this out until I have enough for a full turbo back Ultimate Racing exhaust. My question is do I need a tune better than the off the shelf stage 2 map to run this downpipe without a CEL or any other short term issues? I am trying to wait for a pro tune until i am fully bolted so i am not wasting money. Thanks for helping keep the Mazda community informed!

    • The stage-2 is fine for what you have, but I can’t overemphasize enough about the cat in the downpipe. If you are running the stock turbo with a catless downpipe, you are causing damage to the turbo. If you are only doing it for a little bit, and taking it easy, it will probably be OK. Just keep that in mind.

If you need some more help, please feel free to give us a call. We are always happy to provide free advice and support over the phone. Our number is 561-395-5700. We are open Monday-Friday 10:00-6:00EST, and Saturday 12:00-4:00EST.

  18. Hi,
On a gen 2 speed 3, how essential would an upgraded HPFP be if i was to run a stage 1 OTS map from Cobb, knowing that i have a Cobb SRI and TIH? Is it safe or would the fuel pump internals be essential/safest thing to do first?

Thank you very much for your help!

    • If all you have is intake and turbo hose, the stock pump should be fine. Once you start to replace the downpipe, then you absolutely need an upgraded fuel pump. We suggest the cp-e performance high flow fuel pump and Cobb High-Flow Cat Downpipe for MazdaSpeed 3 cars.

If you need some more help, please feel free to give us a call. We are always happy to provide free advice and support over the phone. Our number is 561-395-5700. We are open Monday-Friday 10:00-6:00EST, and Saturday 12:00-4:00EST.

  19. I have a gen 1 2009 Mazdaspeed 3 and ran a Cobb SRI and TIH with stage 1 ots maps and stock fuel pump internals for a year. I just upgraded to autotech internals and it definitely runs even better with the stage 1 map. I’m waiting until I install the a highflow cat and downpipe before flashing to stage 2. I hope this helps! Good luck Mzspeed3. Pz

    • Hi Jeff,

Thanks for reading our blog. You are RIGHT ON with your plans! You seem to be dong everything right. It’s great to see that. Good luck on your build.

If you need some more help or a good deal on parts, please feel free to give us a call. We are always happy to provide free advice and support over the phone. Our number is 561-395-5700. We are open Monday-Friday 10:00-6:00EST, and Saturday 12:00-4:00EST. Be sure to mention that you are from the blog, and we will defintely take great care of you.

  20. I have a 2012 ms3 with Cobb Sri on it. Everything else is stock. Ran diagnostics and it came up that I was running lean. Should I be concerned and do I need a tune? Or will the car be fine without it?

    • Just an intake should not make your car run lean, even with the stock tune. There may be some other problem with the car that you are not aware of. I suggest you take it to a qualified shop for diagnosis. If you are in the South Florida area, we would be happy to help get your car in peak working order.

If you need some help, please feel free to give us a call. We are always happy to provide free advice and support over the phone. Our number is 561-395-5700. We are open Monday-Friday 10:00-6:00EST, and Saturday 12:00-4:00EST.
